Magnetite benefits

 

Producing steel using magnetite ore resources, as opposed to hematite, has a wide range of significant environmental benefits. Magnetite iron ore concentrate can be produced to a high grade (65 to 68%) with low impurities. It can also be used in the direct reduced iron process, which produces sponge iron by direct reduction of the concentrate using natural gas as the reducing agent. In addition, the reduction of magnetite iron ore concentrate for steel production involves less waste and decreased carbon emissions as opposed to hematite smelting. According to a comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of the full steel production chain, making steel with magnetite concentrate instead of hematite ore results in a decrease of at least 100 kg per tonne of CO2 emissions.
